To discover the beauties of Olimje, surrounded by a mosaic of pre-Alpine mountains, hills covered with vineyards and plains along the river Sotla, and to discover its heritage, you can either head on foot or by bike on marked walking paths and bicycle trails. You will find the most beautiful village in Europe - Olimje. In 2009 Slovenia had two participants in the prestigious internationl competition Entente Florale Europe 2009: Olimje (Podčetrtek municipality), in the category of villages (population up to 5,000 inhabitants) and Kamnik in the category of towns (population over 5,000 inhabitants). In the category of villages Olimje was awarded a GOLD MEDAL! In the words of the Chairwoman of the Jury, Ms. Monika Hetsch (Austria): “Olimje is a small Slovenian village in direct vicinity of the spa Terme Olimia. The village was mentioned for the first time in history in 1208 AD. The splendid cultural richness, unspoiled nature, a diverse tourist offer and friendly people invite visitors to join them. Today, the Friars Minor still cherish and preserve the secrets of old medicine and they are happy to invite visitors to a tour of the renovated monastery facilities. Olimje is a true paradise for golf players. They say that playing here is a special occasion because of the beauty of nature surrounding them. Another specialty is most definitely the chocolate from Olimje and the supreme wines which are offered at the table together with numerous culinary delights. A glass of homemade beer, a welcome sound from the deer on the hilltop and a jump to the fairytale land are all also quite inviting and they add another spark to the magical image of Olimje – a wonderful gem of Slovenia.”
